Dr. Bold is an industry-proven optometrist and has experienced a wide array of optometric issues.
Here are a few eye and vision tests that Dr. Michael S. Bold believes you are likely to encounter during a routine comprehensive eye exam:
Visual Acuity Tests
Among the first tests performed in a comprehensive eye exam are visual acuity tests that measure the sharpness of your vision. Dr. Michael S. Bold explains that these are usually performed using a projected eye chart to measure your distance visual acuity and a small, hand-held acuity chart to measure your near vision.
Color Blindness Test
A screening test that checks your color vision is often performed early in a comprehensive eye exam to rule out color blindness. Dr. Michael S. Bold goes on to note that, in addition to detecting hereditary color vision deficiencies, color blind tests can also alert your eye doctor to possible eye health problems that may affect your color vision.
Cover Test
While there are many ways for your eye doctor to check how your eyes work together, Dr. Michael S. Bold believes that the cover test is the simplest and most common. During a cover test, your eye doctor will have you focus on a small object across the room, and then he or she will cover each of your eyes alternately while you stare at the target. While doing this, Dr. Michael S. Bold will assess whether the uncovered eye must move to pick up the fixation target, which could indicate strabismus or a more subtle binocular vision problem that could cause eye strain or amblyopia ("lazy eye"). The test is then repeated up close. And there are many more tests which Dr Bold will perform as necessary or you request.
Dilation Eye Exams
This eye test is most necessary for those people who are at the highest risk of developing eye disease. Your optometrist will inform you if you are potentially one of those people and will recommend a pupil dilation eye exam.
To make your pupils dilate, the eye doctor will add a few drops into your eyes. Once these take effect, the optometrist will be able to examine the internal structure of each eye. A variety of equipment will be used during the exam.
As your pupils become dilated, you will be more sensitive to light than usual. The drops usually take effect within 20-30 minutes, so you will have a little wait before the tests can begin.
Be aware that the drops take a number of hours to wear off; therefore, it is important to remember to bring sunglasses with you to help compensate for the sensitivity to light following your test.
Lasik
Dr. Bold offers pre-operative and post-operative consults for patients who may require LASIK eye surgery in La Palma. During your initial consultation, he will assess your eyes and determine the most likely outcomes from your surgery based on your medical history, and the potential benefits and small risk of complications will be discussed with you so that you can make the best decision for YOU.
During the postoperative phase of treatment, he will follow up with you to make sure that you are having a great recovery and will be available to assist with any questions you may have.
What is LASIK Surgery and how does it work?
Also known as Laser-assisted in situ Keratomileusis, is the full medical term for this procedure. 96% of patients achieve great results, which means contact lenses and glasses may not be required. The cornea is reshaped during the operation, which allows the brain to process light at the back of the eye. Vision is improved as a result.
What is LASIK surgery used to treat?
Chronic eye trouble, such as Hyperopia, Myopia, Hypertropia, Presbyopia, and Astigmatism, are all treated using LASIK eye surgery.
Will it be painful?
The eye is numbed before surgery; therefore, the procedure should be painless or almost painless.
How will LASIK surgery benefit me?
You will no longer require glasses or contact lenses - you will also be able to wear sunglasses without affecting your vision.
And the risks?
When carried out by a skilled LASIK surgeon, the chances of complications should be minuscule. The possible effects include re-infection, slipped flaps, dry eye, halo vision are possible and loss of vision, though highly unlikely.
Macular Degeneration Screening
What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular Degeneration is often referred to as ARMD or AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration), as it is found most often in older people.
Part of the eye's retina, the Macular enables focus and centralization of vision when performing everyday tasks. As the Macular degenerates so the loss of central vision becomes more apparent.
There are 2 types of ARMD:
Wet ARMD
Of the two types of age-related Macular Degeneration, wet ARMD is the most severe. The Macular can become scarred by leaking blood vessels that have grown on the retinal membrane.
Dry ARMD
Dry age-related Macular Degeneration is the more common of the two and is less severe, and is caused by the degeneration or death of the pigment epithelial cells of the retina.
How is ARMD treated?
There is no cure for either type howeve,r there are treatments for the symptoms and to manage the condition. Treatment will depend on which type of ARMD you have and the severity of the disease.
Macular Edema
Macular Edema is the hemorrhaging of blood vessels on the retina. This can be treated orally or with eye drops. Vision may be seriously impacted and become swollen - if these symptoms occur, please contact Dr. Bold immediately.
